(he/him) Grew out of Nashville, Tennessee and planted himself in Philadelphia and New York City. He was following the music scene from the influences of the musical happenings of his hometown and desired to capture the intimacy of interconnectedness within communal spaces. His work touches on a few different themes and embraces an array of styles, but they all converge at the personal.
We spoke about a long term project he has been working on called Pom Poms that centers around photographing the synergetic relationships that occur at a multitude of live shows. From the closeness of DIY house shows to the expanses of larger concert venues, Maddox takes the onus off of the performer and puts the crowd at center stage to lend an eye to the affective resonance of the people that occupy the spaces. Similarly, in his other works, Maddoxs’ approach acknowledges the subject in relation to the spaces they inhabit, offering the viewer the opportunity to establish themselves in the depicted environment and find within the photograph an essence of these affects that may feel familiar.
