To be a college student and professor during the pandemic just sucks. Let’s face it, from having to adapt to online learning, needing to move back home, and not having important resources at your fingertips have dramatically changed the college experience. In response, PhotoLounge has really stepped up to support local faculty and students in every way possible. We identified two areas that were hit the hardest that we knew we could help with: access to film processing and printing, and opportunities to see and show work.
To start, we built the University Program, designed to offer current students access to easy processing from anywhere, and offered them an annual Film Club membership (worth $80) free of charge. This membership offers discounts on film, and upgrades on film scanning that make the cost of taking pictures more affordable. The Film Club also hosts events and gallery shows that are for and funded by members.
Now, just as the pandemic enters its third year, we are excited to mount a high quality, curated, gallery show to celebrate work by this talented and ever growing community of college students. We invited current college students to submit pictures for a chance to be featured in our inaugural annual University Student Show: Photography In the Time of Covid. This show is open and celebrates the work that students have been creating since the pandemic began but never had a chance to share. These photographs are meant to reflect where they have been and their mood during this unprecedented time.
Another part of the show is PhotoLounge’s Student Award in memory of Jerry Brown. Jerry was a friend and mentor to so many in the photo industry including to our founder when the store was just an idea in 1997 and for many years following. He was a Vietnam war photographer who then spent a full career as a sales representative for many of the best known brands in the photo industry. He was a giant, but mostly he loved to help young people succeed. So in honor of him three students, whose work is featured in the show, will receive a photo lab gift card worth $500, $400, and $300 respectively for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The winners will be chosen by Stephen Perloff of the Photo Review.
Please come by PhotoLounge from 12-5pm Monday through Saturday to see incredible photographs made by students and join us on April 1st for a reception from 6-9pm. You can order prints from our website here.
