Time Capsule: The Fast & The Furious, 2002

Time Capsule

Who is in the photo?

My daughter, Mikayla.

Where and when was it taken?

About 22 years ago, my brother gave us a battery powered toy car for one of our kids’ birthdays. It was an awkward gift for our small house and we kept it stored in my in-laws’ barn, right next to the (real) ride-on lawnmower. It was a fast car, and Mikayla, who was still under age 3, was relegated to being a passanger. But tired of being underestimated, one day she jumped behind the wheel and took the car for a spin.

Geek out! What film was used, what camera was used, short story about the image.

I happened to have my Rolleiflex medium format camera ready and shot this picture, probably at the moment she had come to a stop. This is an image that perfectly captures the freedom, sense of achievement, and exhiliration that Mikayla was clearly feeling. Traits that I recognize in Mikayla today.

The film was hand-developed and printed at size 5x5 at PhotoLounge (just like we do today), and placed in a wall frame from Framatic (that we still sell). It hung in my in-laws house (right where it had been taken) for over two decades, never faded, and returned to us now that they’re both gone. I cherish this print.

Thank you Ravid for sharing your story with us.
