This week’s Member Moment features work by Film Club Member and California native Liza Rangel who sent us photos that iconically represent the west-coast beach lifestyle. Scroll down to see her pictures and to read the interview!
PL: What got you interested in photography?
LR: I did Black & White photography one summer in High School, but I picked it back up 2 years ago, and now I'm obsessed with film photography.
PL: What type of camera do you shoot with?
LR: My Minolta x-370, and Canon AE-1 mostly.
PL: When taking pictures, what are some objects or elements or feelings within a scene that inspire you to take a photo?
LR: I always take my cameras with me when I travel, and I love to walk around and explore new areas and wait for a scene that inspires me to capture. I'm interested in photographing the microcosms of human experience that I observe around me, and I hope that the audience can immerse themselves in that moment or world briefly.
PL: Of the pictures you submitted, can you share an interesting story about one?
LR: I grew up in Los Angeles, CA so I have a great nostalgia for the beaches, warm weather, and vintage cars. The Black and White surfer photo was taken in Malibu, CA. I was spending that afternoon with some family walking along the coastline, when I saw these surfers walk towards the water. I had to stop and take a photo of the surfers engaging in their average, yet majestic walk into the water.
PL: What do you enjoy most about film and/or digital photography and what is challenging about it?
LR: I enjoy shooting the most, and being able to travel and explore with my camera. I enjoy shooting in the desert, the beach, or from an airplane window. I love the variety in shooting different film stocks, locations, and trying out new things. It's challenging to not spend all my money and then some on film and gear.
