Emerging Perspectives: University Student Show is our second annual photography show devoted to celebrating work by college students. In a time when pictures serve as visual language and as a disposable means of instant and in-the-moment communication over social media, the photography in this show reflects permanence, artistic expression and mastery, intention and reverence to the medium. The pictures create a diary of this moment in history and the students’ points of view.
Part of the show is the Student Award in memory of Jerry Brown. The awards for first to third place will include $500, $400, and $300 gift cards respectively, good for printing and film processing at the PhotoLounge lab. Jerry was a friend and mentor to so many in the photo industry including to our founder when the store was just an idea in 1997 and for many years following. He was a Vietnam war photographer who then spent a full career as a sales representative for many of the best known brands in the photo industry. He was a giant, but mostly he loved to help young people succeed. Learn more about Jerry and see some of his work on our blog. The winners will be judged by Christy Karpinski of F-Stop Magazine and announced leading up to the reception.
The PL130 Gallery at PhotoLounge opened in 2021 with a mission to raise the voices of a diverse photo community and to show important new work by emerging photographers. For the sake of equity, the gallery eschewed any costs associated with entering or exhibiting shows. Rather, costs are sponsored entirely by an active Film Photography Club where members pay $8 in monthly dues to support local art. All work is printed by PhotoLounge on museum-quality substrates and hung unframed.
The work featured in this show was submitted through a call for entry and we are so happy to have received over 130 submissions from over 30 different universities.
