What We Liked: After great deliberation, we are pleased to announce the winner of last week’s widely encompassing contest. Divided by a glass window, a man and a kid share a moment of silly joy with their arms stretched out to one another. Their hands make an imperfect match but the bond is strong and the happiness radiates. The right side of the image both reveals and withholds: we can find both of their beaming smiles while their eyes are obscured. The man’s eyes are shadowed by his hat, while the child’s are abstracted by glimmers of light. This happy chance provides them with a charming anonymity. Meanwhile, the child’s other hand, carrying two shoes upright makes for a visually interesting and comical prop (one can dream that it’s actually a gravity-defying child). Overall, the warmth and subtleties of the image create a strong composition.
